If you have a web membership already and are adding apps, you have a big opportunity to create an engagement-driving app launch campaign. Mobile apps put your content in your members' pockets wherever they are — on a mountain top, on holiday, waiting for the kettle to boil, or squeezed into a lunch break.
Watch frequency is the single strongest predictor of retention, and anything that removes friction from watching is a retention lever. Members who use branded apps watch 25% more content and engage more deeply with the community.

By the end of this playbook, you will:
A launch runs across four phases. Each phase has one job and a basic list of what to send.
| Phase | Job | What to Send |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Build the Case | Tease that something's coming | Social post(s) + community post |
| 2. Open the Doors | Announce the app is coming, with a date | 1 email + 1 social post + 1 community post |
| 3. Convert | Announce it's live | 1 email + 1 social post + 1 community post |
| 4. Build Momentum | Keep activating members who've downloaded | A P.S. in your next few newsletters + push notifications |
Goal: Get members curious that something's coming, without naming it yet.
Channel: Social Media + Community

Adapting the social post for your niche:
| Niche | Hook |
|---|---|
| Fitness | "If the only time you work out is when you have a full hour blocked, the living room to yourself, and a fully charged laptop — you're putting too much pressure on yourself! Luckily, we're working on something to help you move wherever, whenever." |
| Cooking | "If dinner planning only happens when you're standing in front of your laptop, you're probably ordering takeout more than you'd like." |
| Education / Coaching | "If studying only happens at your desk, you're losing all the small pockets of time in between." |
| Music | "If practice only happens with your instrument in front of a computer, you're missing all the in-between moments." |
Goal: Announce that the app is coming, with a specific date.

Goal: Keep members who've downloaded the app actually using it
Channel: Your existing customer newsletter (as a P.S.) + push notifications
Newsletter P.S. Lines
This is the easiest way to keep the app visible for weeks after launch without writing dedicated app emails — it rides along on communication you're already sending.
Not sending customer newsletters? Check out the Customer Newsletter Guide
Push Notifications
Push notifications only reach members who've already downloaded the app and enabled notifications — so their job isn't to drive the download, it's to get people who already have the app to actually open it and use a feature.
| Notification | Use When |
|---|---|
| What members are loving this week — watch the most-viewed class | 1–2 days after the app launch |
| Build your first playlist — save your go-to content in one place | 3–4 days after app launch |
| "This week's class just dropped. Watch it now →" | Tied to your regular content release |
Keep notifications short (one sentence plus a clear reason to tap), and link to a specific feature or piece of content — not just "open the app."
For the fuller framework on using push notifications as an ongoing retention tool, see the How to Combat Churn Playbook
A live app store listing does not equal awareness. Most members will never go looking for your app unless you tell them, clearly and more than once, that it exists.
Do this instead: Announce it repeatedly, not just once. Weave it into your onboarding sequence, your regular newsletter, and your social content for weeks after launch, not just launch week.
One email and one social post is not a launch plan. Members who miss that one message never hear about the app again.
Do this instead: Use the full communication plan in this playbook (email sequence, push, and social), and keep the app in your regular newsletter rotation indefinitely.
If members hit friction (login issues, missing downloads, a confusing feature) and don't get a fast answer, they quietly stop using the app rather than asking twice.
Do this instead: Prepare FAQ responses before launch and respond to app-specific questions quickly during the first few weeks, when habits are still forming.
Many creators launch an app for the offline-download and on-the-go benefits, then never use its biggest retention advantage: push notifications reach members with more immediacy than email.
Do this instead: Prompt notification opt-in during onboarding, and build push into your ongoing weekly rhythm, not just your launch week. See the How to Combat Churn Playbook for how push fits into a weekly retention system.
| If you are seeing this | Go here next |
|---|---|
| New members aren't forming a watch habit in their first two weeks | Onboarding Playbook — introduce the app once a member has their first content win, not before |
| Churn is climbing and engagement is dropping between content drops | How to Combat Churn Playbook — push notifications are one of your strongest weekly reinforcement cues |
| Community engagement is quiet | How to Build an Engaged Community Playbook — the app is often where members discover community for the first time |

| You want to promote the app on social beyond launch week | Grow Your Instagram Audience Playbook |
| You want the app to stay top of mind long after launch | Customer Newsletter Guide — rotate in an app spotlight periodically |
Apps often become members' primary way to engage with your content. A strong launch sets the foundation for better engagement and retention — but the launch itself is only the beginning. Keep promoting it, keep testing it, and keep listening to what members tell you about how they use it.
You don't have to run this launch alone. Bring your launch plan, your email drafts, or your early adoption numbers into Membership+ — our coaches and fellow creators can help you pressure-test your approach before (or after) you hit send.
