🧠 The Strategic Role of a Customer Newsletter

A customer newsletter should:

  • Reinforce the promise they bought into
  • Increase product usage
  • Create emotional connection
  • Highlight value they may not be using
  • Reduce churn by increasing engagement

📩 Subject Lines + Preview Text (Work Them Together)

Your subject line and preview text should work as a pair. Think of them as:

Subject line = The hook

Preview text = The reinforcement or expansion

When they're aligned intentionally, open rates improve and your message feels clearer and more compelling.

1️⃣ Subject Line Strategy

Your subject line has one job: earn the open. It should create curiosity, relevance, urgency, clarity, or a clear benefit. Rotate styles so your emails don't feel repetitive.

Proven Subject Line Angles

Curiosity: "You might've missed this…" / "This is getting overlooked 👀" / "Something changed inside…"

Benefit-Based: "Your new favorite class just dropped" / "This will save you 20 minutes this week" / "Start here if you're feeling stuck"

Community-Driven: "Members are loving this right now" / "The most completed class this week" / "This conversation blew up 🔥"

Future-Focused: "Here's what's coming next…" / "Don't miss this next week" / "Big update inside"

Avoid writing subject lines that are vague and unclear. If you choose intrigue, use your preview text to clarify.

2️⃣ Preview Text Strategy (Don't waste this space)

Your preview text is clearly visible on both desktop and mobile and plays a major role in whether someone opens your email. Think of it as an extension of your subject line.

Examples of strong pairing:

  • Curiosity + Clarity: Subject: "You might've missed this…" Preview: "A new feature just dropped inside your membership."
  • Benefit + Reinforcement: Subject: "Your new favorite class just dropped" Preview: "Perfect if you only have 20 minutes this week."
  • Intrigue + Explanation: Subject: "This changed everything for members" Preview: "Here's what they started doing differently."
  • Question-Based: Subject: "Struggling to stay consistent?" Preview: "Here's where to start this week."

Avoid using the same preview style every time. Use it intentionally to strengthen your subject line — not repeat it.

🧩 Strategic Reminders for Membership Owners

  • Keep it scannable (short paragraphs or bullets)
  • Use section headers
  • Use emojis strategically
  • One main CTA per email
  • Rotate focus
  • Don't overexplain! Use it as an opportunity to link out and increase your click rate!

📰 Building Blocks

If you've ever stared at a blank email wondering, "What should I send my members this week?" — this section is for you.

You don't need to reinvent your newsletter every time. You need repeatable building blocks you can rotate! A strong membership newsletter combines 2–4 intentional sections that increase engagement, highlight value, drive platform usage, and reinforce why members joined.

🔹 Personal Note + Vision Anchor

Purpose: Connection and leadership.

Start with a short message from you (3–6 sentences). Purpose: Humanizes you and your membership, reminds them who you are, reinforces mission, sets tone for the email.

Example: This week inside the membership, I've been thinking a lot about consistency over intensity. The members who are seeing the biggest progress aren't doing more, they're just showing up.

🔹 What's New

Purpose: Momentum and freshness.

Highlight anything new or updated, such as: a new class or lesson, a new program, a new community discussion, a new feature, a new update.

Keep descriptions short and outcome-focused. Instead of "New 20-minute core class," try "New 20-minute core class — perfect if you're short on time but want something effective." Always link directly.

🔹 Member Favorites / Most Loved

Purpose: Social proof + reduce decision fatigue.

Many members don't use your content because they feel overwhelmed. Show them where to start.

🔥 Most Completed This Week

  • #1: [Title] – "Great if you only have 15 minutes"
  • #2: [Title] – "Perfect for beginners"
  • #3: [Title] – "Members say this one hits different"

This also subtly says: Other people are using this.

🔹 Spotlight Section (Rotate Weekly)

Choose ONE spotlight per newsletter:

Option A: Program Spotlight — Highlight who it's for, what result it helps with, where to start.

Option B: Community Spotlight — Highlight a great post, a transformation, a member win.

Option C: Feature Education — Examples: "Did you know you can download classes?" / "Here's how to favorite content" / "Are you keeping up with the community?" / "Using the calendar to stay consistent" / "How to use the mobile app better"

Feature usage increases retention!

Not sure what to highlight? Check the Changelog in your Uscreen dashboard (look in the bottom left corner!) to see recent updates and new features you may not be actively promoting. You can also browse the Uscreen Help Center for step-by-step explanations and tutorials.

Often, members don't churn because of lack of content — they churn because they don't fully understand what's available to them.

🔹 What's Coming Up

Purpose: Keep members looking forward.

Tease: Upcoming Live events, Challenges, New releases, Special programming, Guest appearances. Keep people looking forward.

🔹 Clear Call to Action (Always)

Purpose: Never send a newsletter without a primary action.

Choose one: Start here → / Watch this → / Join the conversation → / Comment on this → / Save this class →

Clarity increases clicks.
