Lifetime Memberships: Do's and Don'ts

A short guide to deciding whether to offer lifetime access, and how to do it without hurting your recurring revenue.

Overview

A lifetime offer brings in a chunk of cash today. It also means you keep serving that member for as long as they stay, with no more payments coming in. Most memberships are better off without one.

If you decide to offer one, price it high, run it once for a specific campaign, and set it up so lifetime members still get the full experience.

Do

  • Run lifetime as a limited-time campaign with a hard end date
  • Price it at 5x your annual plan or more
  • Offer it to leads and former members
  • Tag lifetime members so you can manage them separately
  • Cap the number of Lifetime Member spots you offer

Don't

  • Leave it on your pricing page all year
  • Discount it
  • Offer it to members who already pay you every month or year
  • Delete the bundle or subscription after you stop promoting. Just make the offer private.

Lifetime Memberships: The Risks

  • Cash now, nothing later. Lifetime members pay once. They can stay for years, and you keep supporting them with content, support, and community time.
  • Underpricing is the most common mistake. If the price is too low, you serve that member for less than they would have paid on a regular plan.
  • Lifetime is a promise. It is hard to take back if your content, costs, or pricing change, and you can't raise the price on someone who already owns it.
  • Lifetime bundles can miss features. Members who buy through a one-time bundle can't use Delphi. They can only take part in Community if you allow all registered users to engage.
⚠️ WATCH OUT
If current monthly or annual members take the lifetime offer, you trade their recurring payments for a single payment.

Lifetime Membership Alternatives

Try these first.

  • A locked-in rate for founding members. Let early members keep today's price for as long as they stay subscribed, using a coupon with a Forever duration. Keep the discount to 20 to 25 percent below your target price (see Play 5 in the Flash Sale Playbook). They stay on a subscription, so they keep full access.
    • Added benefit: This locked-in price is an incentive to stick around, because if they cancel and come back later they’ll pay full price.
  • A one-time program bundle. If people want to own one program or course, sell it as a fixed-price bundle with lifetime access to that program only. The rest of your membership stays on a subscription.

How to Price a Lifetime Membership

  • Start from your annual price. Set lifetime at 5x annual or more, which equals five years of access.
  • Example: if your annual plan is $200, price lifetime at $1,000 or higher. Annual is usually 10x monthly, so that is about 50x your monthly price.
  • Gut check: would you be happy with this sale if the member is still here in 10 years? If not, raise the price.

How to Create a Lifetime Membership on Uscreen

Option 1: Fixed-price bundle (simplest)
  1. Go to Bundles, click New Bundle, and choose Fixed Price. This gives permanent access for a single payment.
  2. Add a title, description, and image. Set the price, then use Manage Content to add your content.
  3. Set the bundle to Private and share the link only during your campaign.
  4. In your Community settings, let all registered users engage, so lifetime members can take part.
  5. Build an automation that tags lifetime buyers (for example "Lifetime"). Use the tag to leave them out of sales emails and keep them in your customer newsletter.
  6. Add new releases to the bundle as you publish them. Lifetime members only see what is in it.
  7. When the campaign ends, leave the bundle Private. Do not delete it. Deleting a bundle removes access for everyone who bought it.
⚠️ Watch Out: Bundles and Community Access
Letting all registered users engage in Community also gives churned members continued Community access, since they still have an account.
Option 2: Subscription with a Forever coupon (if lifetime members need Delphi or you need community to stay more private)
  1. Create a private subscription plan.
  2. Create a coupon for 100 percent off, applied to that plan, with the duration set to Forever. No payment method is needed at checkout.
  3. Manually assign the subscription and coupon to the customer
  4. Members hold an active subscription, so they can use Delphi and community.
⚠️ Watch Out
Payment for the lifetime price still has to be collected somewhere, which usually means an external checkout and a Zap. Talk to your CSM before choosing this route.

How to Market a Lifetime Membership

  • Offer it to leads who haven't paid and to former members. Keep it away from current monthly and annual members.
  • Cap the number you offer. For example, there are only 100 lifetime member spots.
  • Send the three-email sequence from the Flash Sale Playbook: announcement, reminder, last chance. One call to action per email, pointing to the private bundle link.
  • Keep distance from other promotions. Don't run it within eight weeks of Black Friday or another flash sale.
  • When it ends, switch the offer off and remove it from any landing pages. Onboard lifetime buyers like any new member so they use what they bought.
💡 Post your lifetime offer and price in the Membership+ Community before you launch, and our coaches will help you pressure-test it.
